Erasmus+ Youth Exchanges

Who

Young people aged 13–30. University enrolment is not required.

What it offers

A group learning exchange outside school: workshops, debates, role-play and outdoor activities. The grant supports travel and the practical costs needed for the exchange.

Duration

5–21 days, excluding travel time.

How to start

Find a participating youth organisation or an informal group project in your country. Individuals do not submit the organisation's grant application themselves.

European Solidarity Corps

Who

Residents of covered countries can register at 17 and start an activity from 18 to 30; humanitarian-aid volunteering has an upper age limit of 35.

What it offers

Individual or team volunteering in areas such as culture, environment, health and sport. Opportunities are matched through the official portal and must be open to the participant's country of residence.

Duration

From 2 weeks to 12 months, depending on the activity.

Who

A time-limited selection for 18-year-old citizens or residents of an EU Member State or an Erasmus+-associated country. Exact birth dates change with each call.

What it offers

A travel pass to explore Europe, mainly by rail, plus a discount card. This is a learning journey, not a university semester or admission programme.

Duration

Call-specific travel window; successful applicants can currently travel for up to 7 days within a maximum one-month trip.

Erasmus+ VET mobility

Who

Learners in vocational education and training, apprentices and recent VET graduates. A recent graduate's mobility must take place within one year of graduation.

What it offers

A work placement or learning period at a partner VET provider, company or labour-market organisation. The EU grant is designed to support travel and subsistence.

Duration

2 weeks–12 months.

How to start

Ask the VET school, training provider or sending organisation. Individuals cannot apply directly for the grant; the accredited organisation selects participants.

One higher-education rule across all 27 EU countries

Yes — the entry rule is universal. EU Member States participate fully in Erasmus+, but the concrete partner list, deadline and payable grant remain local.

1You must be enrolled in a recognised higher-education programme; finishing school alone is not enough for a university semester exchange.
2The home institution must hold an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education and select the participant; an individual cannot apply directly to the EU for this grant.
3The faculty agreement determines actual destinations. The home institution and National Agency determine dates, grant rates and top-ups.

The faculty partner list is the real inventory. A country appearing in Erasmus+ is not proof that your institution has a place there.

Programmes and funding routes

EU-wide routes come first. Germany-only funding follows as the first fully researched national example and is marked explicitly.

Where

The 27 EU states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Türkiye; some worldwide outgoing places can also be funded from a university's KA131 budget.

Format

Semester/year of study, traineeship, combined study + traineeship, or a blended short mobility.

Duration

Study or traineeship: 2–12 months. Blended short mobility: 5–30 physical days plus a virtual component and normally at least 3 ECTS. Maximum 12 months per study cycle; 24 months for one-cycle degrees such as medicine.

Funding

A monthly grant set by the home institution under its National Agency rules, destination groups and available budget. Possible extras include a traineeship supplement, fewer-opportunities top-up, green-travel support and travel days. Host tuition, registration, examination, laboratory and library fees are waived.

Who qualifies

You must be enrolled in a recognised degree at a participating higher education institution in an EU Member State or associated country. Citizenship is not the deciding test. For study mobility, the home and host institutions need an agreement for your subject; the stay must fit your degree and be recognised through a Learning Agreement.

How to apply

Apply to the International Office or Erasmus coordinator at your home institution. Students cannot apply directly to the EU or National Agency. Ask for the partner list for your department, the internal deadline, selection criteria and exact grant table for the project year.

Check before relying on it

Do not copy an old national grant table: the home institution sets the payable rate under its current National Agency rules. Country status and project agreements can change between calls, so confirm the destination for the live project year.

Where

Partner universities worldwide: Western Balkans, Eastern Partnership, Mediterranean, Asia, Central Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, USA/Canada, the Pacific and other eligible regions.

Format

Study mobility and, where the project includes it, traineeship mobility with a named partner institution or organisation.

Duration

Normally 2–12 months for student study or traineeship mobility; the available duration is controlled by the specific university project.

Funding

A monthly mobility grant plus distance-based travel support under the approved project; exact amounts come from the home institution.

Who qualifies

The home institution must participate in Erasmus+ and already hold a funded project and agreement covering the intended partner country. A country being globally eligible does not mean your institution has a place there.

How to apply

Ask the home International Office specifically for KA171 and KA131 international-outgoing projects, filtered by faculty and study cycle. Apply only through the home institution's selection.

Check before relying on it

Current Erasmus+ rules exclude student and staff mobility to Belarus and Russia. Some ODA-country flows also restrict outgoing bachelor/master students, so the project office must confirm the exact direction and study cycle.

Where

Worldwide, subject to the home university's own PROMOS priorities and exclusions.

Format

Study and traineeship stays, thesis/research stays, language and specialist courses, summer schools, and organised study or competition trips.

Duration

Study, traineeship or thesis stay: generally 1–6 months. Language course: 3 weeks–6 months. Specialist course: up to 6 weeks. The university may fund only part of the eligible period.

Funding

The university chooses which components to award. Under the current DAAD 2027 table, possible components include a destination-based monthly partial stipend (€350, €450 or €550), a one-off mobility allowance, and in some formats tuition or course support.

Who qualifies

Students enrolled at a participating German university; the university publishes its own target groups, destinations and selection rules. PROMOS is often the first fallback when Erasmus+ does not cover the destination or format.

How to apply

Apply through the German home university, not directly to the DAAD. Search the university site for “PROMOS” and ask the International Office which call covers the intended stay.

Check before relying on it

PROMOS is not a guaranteed national entitlement: each university decides whether it participates, what it funds and its internal deadline. Double funding of the same purpose is restricted.

Where

Worldwide, where the DAAD call and current travel-safety rules allow the stay.

Format

Semester abroad or thesis project for students at a German university of applied sciences (HAW/FH); a separate HAW.International line covers traineeships.

Duration

Study stay: 3–6 months. Thesis stay: 1–6 months. The separate traineeship line funds 2–6 months.

Funding

Country-based monthly scholarship, travel allowance, DAAD health/accident/liability insurance and, for study stays, a possible tuition contribution up to the destination ceiling; language-course and inclusion support may also apply.

Who qualifies

Bachelor, master or diploma students of any field at a German HAW/FH. German citizenship is not mandatory if the DAAD's general residence/status rules are met.

How to apply

Apply directly in the DAAD scholarship portal under the current HAW.International call. Deadlines are tied to the planned start window, so select the destination and read the live call before preparing documents.

Check before relying on it

HAW.International cannot fund the same stay at the same time as Erasmus+ or PROMOS. Confirm whether your institution is legally a HAW/FH before investing in the application.

Where

Switzerland for students coming from Germany and other recognised partner institutions.

Format

One or two exchange semesters with credit recognition, or a study-related traineeship; blended intensive programmes are also supported.

Duration

Student study or traineeship mobility: 2–12 months.

Funding

A Swiss mobility grant based on the stay and the current Movetia call. Incoming funding is handled and paid by the Swiss host institution; host tuition is waived under the programme standards.

Who qualifies

You must be enrolled at a recognised home institution that has a valid partnership with the Swiss host. Citizenship is not decisive; nomination and the inter-institutional agreement are.

How to apply

Start with the home International Office to obtain nomination, then follow the Swiss host's application and grant process. The Swiss institution is the funding contact for incoming students.

Check before relying on it

SEMP is the correct 2026 route while Switzerland is outside associated Erasmus+ status. Association is planned from the 2027 project cycle; the actual route still depends on the dates and agreements used by both institutions.

Where

United States, at a partner university of the German home institution.

Format

A study semester or academic year arranged through the German university's US exchange agreement.

Duration

The linked exchange is normally one semester or academic year; the scholarship does not fund a complete US degree or a stay that has already begun.

Funding

For the announced 2027/28 round: €2,000 toward transatlantic travel, plus the Fulbright seminar, preparation and alumni network. It is a travel grant, not full living-cost funding.

Who qualifies

German citizenship is required. Bachelor students need at least four successfully completed subject semesters by the US start; master and specified traditional-degree students can also apply. The US stay must run through the German university's partner agreement.

How to apply

The 2027/28 page says applications open in November 2026 and close in January 2027. Apply in the Fulbright portal and follow the home university's nomination process.

Check before relying on it

A student merely resident or enrolled in Germany without German citizenship is not eligible for this specific Fulbright grant. Check PROMOS, Erasmus+ international mobility, HAW.International or the university's bilateral funding instead.

Where

Format

A full academic year of study abroad; this is the longer alternative when one exchange semester is not enough.

Duration

One academic year. DAAD explicitly says the annual scholarship is not a one-semester grant.

Funding

A destination-based monthly scholarship plus travel and other programme-specific benefits; the live call lists the exact rate and any tuition ceiling.

Who qualifies

Eligibility follows the DAAD's general status/residence rules and the country call, not a simple EU-passport test. Academic fit and a coherent study plan are assessed competitively.

How to apply

Apply directly through the DAAD scholarship database. Choose the destination first: application dates differ by region and intended start.

Check before relying on it

For a single semester, DAAD points students instead to Erasmus+, PROMOS or HAW.International. Do not prepare this application unless the student genuinely wants the full academic year.

Where

EU and Switzerland for full degrees or temporary study; outside the EU/Switzerland generally for a temporary study period, subject to the BAföG rules.

Format

A funding companion for study abroad and, when compulsory under the degree regulations, an overseas traineeship. It can be combined with an exchange route subject to income and double-funding rules.

Duration

Within the EU/Switzerland, funding can cover study through the foreign qualification. Outside that area, it is generally up to one year, exceptionally up to 2.5 years. The exact minimum stay depends on the route and status.

Funding

The domestic BAföG assessment plus possible travel, health-insurance and cost-of-living supplements. Necessary foreign tuition can be covered for up to one year to a maximum of €5,600 as a non-repayable grant.

Who qualifies

Not limited to German citizens, but it has detailed residence/status, age, income, assets and academic-progress tests. Because foreign supplements raise the assessed need, an application can be worthwhile even when domestic BAföG was refused for financial reasons.

How to apply

File a separate application with the BAföG office responsible for the destination country, ideally about six months before departure. The domestic BAföG application is not transferred automatically.

Check before relying on it

This is funding, not an exchange place. The student must first secure admission or nomination and separately prove that the foreign study is eligible and academically useful.

Bilateral university exchanges

For Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Latin America and many US or UK partners, the place may come from the home university's own bilateral agreement. Such exchanges may waive host tuition but do not automatically include a living grant. Check the faculty partner database, then the national funding layer; in Germany this includes PROMOS, HAW.International, DAAD, Fulbright and Auslands-BAföG.

Erasmus Mundus is different

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters funds an integrated full master's delivered by a university consortium. It is not a semester exchange and has its own programme-level application.
