Every figure, and where it comes from
Two kinds of number decide a route: how much the state requires you to prove, and how often it says no. The first is published — we show it together with the body that issued it. The second is not published, and this page says so instead of replacing it with an estimate.
What the state requires you to prove
The amount you must show for a student visa, across every destination we cover. One year, one student, no dependants. This is the figure a consulate refuses over, so each one names the authority, the year and the document.
| Destination | Amount for one year | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| 🇱🇹 Lithuania | €8.071€576.50/month × 12 (half the €1,153 minimum wage) + €1,153 for the return journey | |
| 🇱🇻 Latvia | €9.360€780/month × 12 — the subsistence level for a residence permit from 1 April 2026 | Fact |
| 🇪🇪 Estonia | €10.560€880/month × 12 — four times the subsistence level (€220 in the 2026 state budget) | |
| 🇩🇪 Germany | €11.904€992/month × 12 on a blocked account (Sperrkonto) — Federal Foreign Office rate for 2026 | |
| 🇳🇱 Netherlands | €13.569€1,130.77/month × 12 — immigration-service (IND) requirement for a research university or an applied-sciences university (hbo), tuition not included | |
| 🇦🇹 Austria | €15.701Means of subsistence for the OeAD student residence permit — €1,308.39/month for applicants aged 24 and over, proven 12 months in advance (€15,700.68); under 24 the rate is €722.58/month (€8,670.96). Rent above €386.43/month must be covered on top. 2026 rate. |
Amounts change — usually upward, usually in autumn for the next academic year. A destination whose current amount we cannot tie to an issuing body is dropped from this table rather than shown with an old number.
How often visas are refused
Of the destinations we cover, one publishes a figure we can cite. The Dutch immigration service (IND) reports 99% of student applications approved in 2023, 2024 and 2025 — a refusal rate of roughly 1%. Read it together with its mechanism: the application is filed by the university as a recognised sponsor, so the selection has already happened at admission, not at the permit stage. For Germany the absence is documented: issued visas are published, refusals per consulate are kept for internal use. For Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania we found no official data that separates student permits from the rest — Lithuania has moved students off national visas onto residence permits, which are reported undivided. For Austria we found no official figure that separates refused «Student» residence permits from the rest. Where we don't have the number, we say so.
student visas Germany issued in 2024. How many it refused is not public: refusal data per consulate is classified for internal use only.
What we do instead for the four destinations without a figure: every route carries a visa-burden mark — low, medium, high. It is assembled from documented requirements (proof amount, appointment wait, blocked account, language certificate), not from success statistics we don't have. It is our assessment, and it is marked as one.
The rule
A figure without an issuing body, a year and a link does not ship. When there is no source we either write that we don't know or drop the block entirely: we don't round, we don't average, we don't fill the gap with a plausible number. The marks below show what each statement stands on.
- Fact— with a source, a year and a link
- AI estimate— honestly marked as an estimate, not a promise
- Human decides— the decision belongs to a human, not the model
- No data— where we don't know, we say so instead of inventing an average
