What works on this route
- Georgia appears in neither paragraph of § 41 AufenthV, so the residence permit cannot be applied for inside Germany after visa-free Schengen entry — the national D visa must be issued in Tbilisi before departure.
- Embassy slots come from a waiting list in registration order, and an offered slot must be confirmed within 7 days or it is cancelled and the queue starts over. Register the moment the admission letter arrives.
- Proof of financing is a blocked account (Sperrkonto) at €992/month — €11,904 for the first year at the 2026 Federal Foreign Office rate.
- Public universities charge no tuition in most federal states; the real cost lines are the semester contribution of €150–350 and, in Baden-Württemberg, €1,500/semester for non-EU students.
- German-taught programmes require C1 (TestDaF or DSH). The English-taught catalogue is concentrated in Master's — English-taught Bachelor's outside private universities is thin.
Why applications get rejected
- Blocked account opened too late or funded below the €992/month rate — the refusal is on means, not on academics.
- The school certificate does not meet the anabin direct-access criteria and no preparatory year (Studienkolleg) place was secured, so the D visa has no admission to attach to.
- Language certificate below the programme threshold — C1 for German-taught, IELTS 6.0 for English-taught.

After visa: settling in

- 2Convert the entry visa into a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) at the Ausländerbehörde before the visa expires — book the appointment the week you arrive; slots are scarce.
- 3Unlock your blocked account (Sperrkonto): once you have a German address and a current account, the agreed monthly amount becomes withdrawable.
- 4Enrol in statutory student health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) — the university won't complete matriculation without proof of cover.
