Study in Lithuania from Georgia

Lithuania stopped issuing student D visas in 2023, so this is the one route of the six that has no visa stage at all — the residence permit is applied for from Georgia through MIGRIS and biometrics follow at VFS in Tbilisi. Cheap tuition and the lowest means requirement of the six, against a decision window that can stretch from 15 days to 45.

Document requirements partly collected

Fact

12 items in the pack. Some of them apply to only part of the 104 programmes we hold for this country — the exact list depends on the university.

We review the pack for completeness and consistency. Whether a document is genuine is decided by the university or the consulate. Source verification may be required.

What this route does not require

Not a promise — a rule of the route. Every line is derived from one data field and names what it rests on.

  • No separate work permit is required — the right to work part-time comes with student status.

  • No payment workarounds are needed — tuition and fees go through an ordinary bank transfer.

What it does require

The other side of the same list. Amounts and scores are in the facts above.

  • Proof of funds in an account — mandatory.
  • A language certificate — mandatory.
  • Paid diploma recognition through SKVC (skvc.lt).

What works on this route

  • Lithuania has issued no national D visa to full-time students since 1 July 2023 — the case opens directly as a temporary residence permit in MIGRIS, and there are no more waiting visas.
  • Biometrics are given at VFS Global in Tbilisi, but the appointment only opens through MIGRIS once the status changes to «submitted to the external service provider» — the rule since 1 December 2024. Booking VFS directly does not work.
  • The external-service-provider fee is €110, and the decision takes 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 — plan the arrival around 45, not 15.
  • Means are €576.50/month — half the €1,153 minimum wage, €8,071 for the year — plus €1,153 for the return journey.
  • The passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, carry at least two blank pages and stay valid at least three months beyond the permit.

Why applications get rejected

  • SKVC recognition not ready by the university deadline.
  • Tuition not paid before enrolment.
  • IELTS below the programme minimum — 5.5 in general, 6.5 for medicine.

After visa: settling in

  1. 1Collect your temporary residence permit (TRP) card from the Migration Department and declare your place of residence within the set window after arrival.
  2. 2University dorms (Vilnius University, KTU, VMU) are affordable; Vilnius / Kaunas private rental is moderate — secure it before term starts.
  3. 3Open a bank account — Lithuania is fintech-friendly, so a local IBAN is quick to set up once you're registered.
  4. 4Mandatory health insurance is a condition of the permit — keep it continuous.
