Arriving in the Netherlands: what depends on what
Some steps depend on registration. Housing and health cover can be arranged separately; check the requirements with your municipality.

Best found before you travel. A room you have found is not yet a room you can register at.
Study in NL does not vet the housing providers it lists. Stay critical and check the contract before you pay.

Register with the municipality
Required if you stay in the Netherlands for longer than a short visit; your municipality confirms whether it applies to you. This registration is what produces your BSN. Appointments are booked with the municipality.

After visa: settling in
- 1Register with the municipality (gemeente) to get your BSN (citizen service number) — needed for a bank account, a job and a phone contract.
- 2Lock down housing BEFORE you fly: the Amsterdam / Utrecht / Delft / Eindhoven shortage is severe. Never transfer a deposit for a room you haven't seen via a verified party — sight-unseen rental scams are common.
- 3Start with your university housing office, then register on ROOM.nl / DUWO and Studentenwoningweb; for Amsterdam run a parallel search on Student Experience, OurCampus, The Social Hub, Hospi Housing, HousingAnywhere and Kamernet.
- 4Open a Dutch bank account once you have a BSN and address (most webshops and rent payments expect iDEAL / a local IBAN).
